Migraine and Acupuncture Treatment

Migraine is a specific type of headache characterized by recurrent episodes of pain, often affecting one side of the head. In many cases, the pain begins on one side and may later spread to both sides. The location of the pain can also change from one episode to another. Migraines are most commonly found in adults and working-age individuals and are often associated with high levels of emotional stress and mental tension.

The exact cause of migraines remains unclear. Several theories have been proposed, including abnormalities in brain chemicals, disruptions in nerve signal transmission, and changes in the function of blood vessels within the brain. From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), migraines are believed to result from blockages in the meridian system, leading to impaired circulation of Qi (vital energy) and Blood. When the flow of Qi and Blood becomes obstructed, pain occurs.

Acupuncture is one of the treatment methods commonly used in TCM for migraine relief. The treatment aims to promote the smooth circulation of Qi and Blood and remove blockages within the meridians. Acupuncture points located on the head and neck, such as Baihui, Sishencong and Hegu, are frequently selected to help alleviate symptoms.

In addition to acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine may be prescribed to further support the circulation of Qi and Blood, improve meridian flow, and promote overall balance within the body. As circulation in the head and neck improves, migraine symptoms often become less severe, and the frequency of recurrence may gradually decrease.

7 reasons why acupuncture is good for a migraine :
     1.  It provides pain relief – by stimulating nerves located in muscles and other tissues, acupuncture leads to release of endorphins and other neurohumoral factors and changes the processing of pain in the brain and spinal cord.
     2.  It reduces inflammation- increasingly there is evidence that inflammation is associated with a migraine. Acupuncture promotes the release of vascular and immunomodulatory factors that can counter this.
     3.  It reduces the degree of cortical spreading depression – This is an electrical wave in the brain associated with a migraine.
     4.  It reduces plasma levels of calcitonin gene-related peptide and substance – These are pain-signaling neuropeptides that may be implicated in the pathophysiology of a migraine.
     5.  It modulates extracranial and intracranial blood flow – changes in cranial blood flow don’t necessarily initiate migraine pain but may contribute to it.
     6.  It affects serotonin levels in the brain – serotonin may be linked both to the initiation of migraines and to the relief of acute attacks (through triptans, drugs that promote seretonin levels).
     7.  It increases local microcirculation – This aids the dispersal of swelling.
